Our First Family Cruise
We made the decision last year that we were going to take a family cruise. Sam and I have cruised in the past, my parents cruise often but we have never gone as a family. We wanted to make the memories with the kids before my dad progressed with his Alzheimers. We chose to go with Carnival cruise line for many reasons, but especially their pricing! When we found the Carnival Vista we were hooked!
With Sam being in the Army, he usually misses the small family trips we take, so this was his first REAL vacation in almost 6 years! And in case you wanted to add anxiety to my already anxious personality.. we didn’t find out until days beforehand that he could get his leave approved by the Army to go! ah! Thankfully it worked out though, and we took a quick very long road trip to Galveston, TX. We packed four adults, and four kids in our Suburban with all of our luggage (and a luggage tray on the back) but it was definitely a trip.
Once we made it to Galveston, we had an AIRBNB that was right off of the ocean (gulf, or whatever you want to call it, Miss specific) and the kids had a blast! We hadn’t even made it to the ship and they were already having an amazing time. My brother and sister who live in NY flew into Houston the day before the ship left and we got to take the kids down to the water and let them find some seashells. It was rainy, damp and freezing but the kids didn’t let that stop them!
We left our AIRBNB house and went to the port to board the ship on Super Bowl Sunday so it made it a little more hectic, but we didn’t mind! The rooms we had were called Family Harbor rooms, which made cruising a little easier with the kids! They were so excited to see our balcony, the open room with the two bed areas and our walk in closet. One of their favorite parts of the family harbor rooms is the exclusive lounge on the floor which is full of snacks, board games and hang out areas!
Our cruise was an 8 day cruise with 3 ports. The first stop was Cozumel where we went to an all inclusive beach for the day. Our second stop was in Belize and the third port was in Mahogany bay, Roatan, Honduras.
At our first port in Cozumel, we loved our day at Mr. Sanchos. We learned that Charlie loved the sand and would fill up her little sand bucket, then dump it out and repeat that… for HOURS! The kids brought their snorkel masks and enjoyed seeing the little fish swimming around in the clear water! I was surprised by how rough the sand was though, it was more of a ground up shell mix. It was definitely fun seeing them experience the ocean water for the first time!
Our second port was Belize, and we chose to keep the kids on the ship at Camp Ocean. They had already had a few days there and had a great time so we felt comfortable with that choice. It was a short tender ride to the port (maybe 15 mins?) and we walked around and checked out the different shops.
We walked around the different shops and found some fun things, but it was very crowded when we got there. We found out that if we walked about 5 minutes outside of the port we would find the second Belize sign.
Our third and final port was by far my favorite and most memorable! We went to Mahogany Bay, Roatan, Honduras. IT WAS GORGEOUS!!! It was hands down my favorite location! It is maintained and so well taken care of as you pull up, and there is a short little walk (maybe 5 minutes) down a beautiful path to their private beach. We felt like it belonged to us, with how quiet it was, it was so peaceful!
I would go back there in a heartbeat! The sand was so soft, the water was so clear and there were little fish swimming around. The beach was clean, there were outdoor showers and plenty of little restaurants. Definitely a must to add to your bucket list!
One of the biggest questions people have asked me so far about our cruise.. “but did the kids REALLY enjoy Camp Ocean?” the answer to that -> HECK YES! first of all.. what is camp ocean? It is the kids center for children 2-11, which is completely free until 10pm, and super safe and amazing! I honestly was nervous, unsure about the idea of being on a “family cruise” and having my kids go there. They ALL were begging us to go back to camp! There is a daily schedule of events, their hours and what meals they will feed them if you choose to go that route. Andrew and Genevieve were together in the Stingrays (6-8yr) and Daryl and Charlie were together in the Penguins (2-5yr).. If they fell asleep they laid them down on a toddler nap mat and covered them up, it was definitely convenient! They ended up making best friends on this trip from camp and wanted to be with them. It made me glad that they were creating memories, in their own ways. The camp staff was super attentive, so caring and beyond loving to all of the kids and it warmed my heart when they wrote them letters before we left to say goodbye!
And we definitely can’t forget about the food! We loved every little bit of it! I went with the motto of first breakfast, second breakfast, first lunch, second lunch.. you get the idea! I couldn’t control myself, and the service was amazing. Even with a few picky eaters, we managed to make it work and we even had a few fancy dinner nights which we enjoyed! There was even a Dr Seuss “green eggs and ham” breakfast that was so magical for the kids! They were able to meet the Cat in the Hat, Sam I Am, and Thing 1 and Thing 2!
It was definitely a learning experience with 4 littles, but overall, we would do it again in a heart beat! We were able to make memories as a family, and we experienced new things together. It made us realize that we want to travel more and make it more of a priority in the future, Army permitting. Sam and I had adult time, we spent family time together, and all 10 of us even had some fun dancing moments!
OH… and Sam even got to dress up as the bird from “Horton Hears a Who” for a stage play for the kids! I’m sure he loved every second of it as much as the kids loved seeing Daddy up there being goofy for them!
